Description

The Karen Biel Nursing Leadership Fellowship builds bridges through clinical rotations and experience with "real time" integrated health care team members taking care of patients and their families.

“I have been a preceptor for a couple years now and I love teaching new nurses. I am also a member of our unit's Coordinating Council and an Epic Superuser. The Biel Fellowship really taught me to advocate for patients and pushed me to pursue these leadership positions to make changes in my unit.” -Amanda Yackley, 2017 Biel Fellow

14 students have completed the Karen Biel Nursing Leadership Fellowship and graduated on to careers in Nursing. This program identifies 12 key leadership characteristics that promote patient-centered care and engages Fellows in activities that develop these clinical leadership characteristics through self-reflection, small group discussion, guest speaker presentations, simulation, and completion of on-line learning modules.

“The Biel Fellowship was a great opportunity during my undergraduate career. I am thankful for all of the meaningful discussions that took place which helped prepare my mind to think deeper about the care I now provide for my patients. I can easily see connections between what I learned in the Biel Fellowship and my career such as the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and strong communication techniques.” -Courtney Scollard, 2019 Biel Fellow

Donations are applied to...

the Karen Biel Nursing Leadership Fellowship.

Each semester of this program offers Fellows opportunities to expand on current leadership knowledge and skills through participating in cognitive, emotional and experiential learning to enhance their professional practice at the clinical level. In addition, there is a one credit 30-hour field experience offered during May term. The field experience offers the student an opportunity to interact and participate as an interdisciplinary member of the healthcare team at a participating clinical site. The student will gain knowledge about interdisciplinary collaboration, current healthcare issues, and learn about strategies that promote patient safety during and throughout patient transitions of care.
